Sustainability isn’t a nice extra anymore, it’s something that holidaymakers often actively look for when choosing where to stay.

The proportion strongly agreeing with the statement “Sustainable travel is really important to me” rose from 28% in October 2023 to 33% in October 2025, showing a steady increase in engagement over time.

With one in three people actively seeking greener accommodation options, make sure you’re not missing the opportunity to tell potential guests about your efforts. As well as boosting your booking appeal, eco-friendly features can reduce running costs too. Here are some things to consider.

Energy efficient and heating

The most effective place to start is by improving your holiday accommodation’s energy performance. Heating uses the most energy, so upgrading to a modern boiler or installing a smart thermometer can cut waste and costs significantly. Improving insulation, draught-proofing and installing quality windows help keep the heat in, making it comfortable all year round.

EV charging as a key amenity

As electric cars become more popular, more of your guests will need to charge them. So providing an EV charging point at your holiday accommodation can increase your property’s appeal and attract a growing group of eco-conscious travellers. Take a look at Airhouses website. It shows EV chargers by each of the holiday lodges in the photos as well as including a section about it on their website. Some owners decide to add a small fee for this to help with the installation and maintenance costs.

(Nb. if you don’t have an onsite charger for electric vehicles, it’s helpful to provide information about the nearest one on your website and in your guest book).

Reduce waste and use low impact products

Minimising waste doesn’t require major changes. By leaving clear recycling instructions, well placed bins and refillable toiletries its then easy for guests to help do their part. To help reduce your holiday accommodations carbon footprint you could start using LED bulbs, eco-friendly cleaning products and organic linens. If you already do this, make sure you give it the mention it deserves.

Support local

Choose locally sourced items to put in your welcome hampers. It could be cheese, bread, sweet treats, milk or eggs. Recommend local suppliers in your guest information book – butchers, bakers, fishmongers and the nearest village shop or deli. As well as supporting your community, it helps to reduce transport emissions.

Share your story

Once you’ve made these eco-friendly upgrades, highlight them in your welcome guide and guest information book and use it as content on social media. Many guests will appreciate the sustainable steps you’ve taken and could choose your accommodation for that reason. Also, add a page on your website (or a paragraph on a relevant page) and update information on any listing sites you use. This will help you get seen in searches made by your eco-conscious future guests.
